The 2008-2009 school year is starting in less than one week today.  For those of you who may be counting the sleeps that means that there is only 6 more sleeps.

The first week at Vanguard is always an exciting time with returning students meeting up again after summer and new students meeting a whole school of new people.  The week starts off right with breakfast at 8:30am followed by the opening chapel.  This year we are thrilled to have Mike Love speak.  After that there is always a time of waiting in lines, to register, pay and get your photo taken for the student id cards.  So remember to comb your hair on the first day of school!

As part of Vanguard College’s 2nd home initiative we will be having a table set up where we will be able to give you bus schedules, opportunity to sign up for the grocery run, or even sign up to buy a Vanguard hoodie.  New for this year we will also be having a garage sale (a free one) for students who are missing some odds and ends from their apartment.  So before you run over to Value Village check out what we have at Vanguard.  Also at this time we will have a package for all out of province students.  So come by and visit us on registration day!

Another highlight of the week, occurs on Wednesday when the whole school jumps on buses and heads out to a camp nearby for the all school retreat.  Once again we have food and chapel but there are also great games and if it’s not snowing the occasional water fight.

Tube Mania

Even after the all school retreat is over the fun of the week is not.  Most programs will be heading out on the first weekend for a program retreat.  Each retreat is unique but all allow you to build relationships with those you’ll be spending the year with and have fun while your at it.

The first week of school is a very exciting busy time which will give you plenty of opportunities to meet students and settle in for a great year.  We are looking forward to it!
See you at 8:30am on Tuesday!

In a few short days we will be 1 month away from the start of the 2008-2009 school year.  Perhaps for some of you this makes you feel excited and others you are thinking about how much you have to do in this next month…especially if you are planning on moving across the country. If you need any assistance or have any questions feel free to email me in the recruitment department.  So if you have a question, need a place to live or need a ride from the airport; call us (Jarren & Cindie Hildebrandt).

Here at Vanguard we are working hard at getting the school ready for you.  Currently there are people all over the building putting in new boilers.  For those of you who are new students this might not mean a lot but for returning students suddenly your November should get a lot warmer.

If you are reading this and haven’t applied yet - there is still a little bit of time left.  We also still have $1000 scholarships available for those who qualify.

I can’t wait to meet all of the new students this year and to catch up with the returning students.  We know it’s going to be a great year!  Now we are just waiting for all of you to show up!

Vanguard in your backyard!

Well, summer time is finally here!  Children are running through sprinklers on the lawn, dads are flipping burgers on the barbeque, students are working hard at summer jobs, and teachers are taking a well deserved vacation.  Here in the recruitment office of Vanguard College things are busier than ever as - amidst the usual buzz of helping students prepare for the fall - we say goodbye to one staff member and welcome two new ones.  After three years here in Vanguard recruitment Tim Bratton is resigning his position at the school to pursue further Christian Higher Education out in Vancouver; Tim is sad to leave the school but glad to finally be pursuing his Master’s Degree.  At the same time two new staff are being welcomed to the fold, Jarren and Cindie Hildebrandt, newly wed and newly graduated from Vanguard College (read more about Cindie and Jarren in “What’s News”).

This season of change is also the season for summer camps and we hope that you get a chance join in on the fun and the fellowship.  Many Vanguard staff and faculty will also be out to take part in what God does in this time, so if you want to connect with us this summer then check the schedule below to see when we will be at a camp near you.

It was another great weekend with the Vanguard Booth, this time here in Edmonton at Missions Fest Alberta. Missions Fest here in Edmonton is always a great time for people who are passionate about ministry to come together and share what God is doing in the world. This year was no exception and we were so glad to talk with so many people who are actively getting involved in the work of the Gospel. Of course we also had a lot of fun as we gave away coke and took entries for the last stop on our Missions Fest tour. The Alberta finalists for our Missions Fest Draw are Russell Teasdale from Edmonton who is our third finalist in our $100 missions trip bursary draw, and Amelia Stevenson also from Edmonton who is our third finalist in our Travel Pack draw. We will be doing our draw for the grand prize winner later this week so stay tuned.

This past summer Vanguard Alum Julie Rohr Rice was in Peru with her sister working with young children and teaching them how to paint and take photographs. This simple missions trip has culminated into a book showcasing the art and photography from their trip a project which they are now selling to raise money to help more orphans at Casa De Paz in Peru. You can read more about this great story in an article featured in the latest edition of Christian Week, www.christianweek.org, or visit the Rohr sisters website where you can purchase their book, www.papercastle.ca.

Well… the time is drawing near and we’ll soon be heading back to Edmonton. Last night we had a great time in Cambelton, hometown of our fearless leader…Lorne! Many Showed up and it was an awesome service. Youth from Lewisporte, Cambelton, Birchy Bay,  and Embree came out. Afterwards, we all camped out at Lorne’s aunt Edna’s. It was a pretty sweet night.

In the morning we had one last feed of bacon and eggs and decided to spend the day on an excursion. Myself (Mike), Lorne and Rick decided to put on our skates and skate out on the bay in Cambelton. As the girls took the van, they met us on the opposite side of Cambelton, about six kilometers away. What a HUGE town eh?

Right now, we’re in Point Lemington at my house. Earlier we had a nice “cooked” turkey dinner with all the fixings. Who says you gotta eat bad on ministry trips. Afterwards we took the quad out to the bay, and tied two tires to the rear of the quad. You kinda gotta be there to picture it, but only small cuts and bruises came out of it!!

Tomorrow morning we’ll be doing the sunday morning service here in Point Lemington, then heading out to Corner Brook for the sunday night service. Following that, a semi-night sleep and flying out around 5:50am the next morning….hopefully we won’t be late for the flight this time. Thanks for your prayers and we’ll see you on Monday!!

There are some pics posted up on the gallery…check it out!!

So right now we’re in Clarenville for the night. Just finishing up a fantastic service with the people of Clarenville.

Last night, we were blessed in doing ministry in Botwood (my hometown). About 200 people, young and old, came out to the church. After Lorne’s message, many people responded and many lives were changed.  Of course you cannot complete a night without food, and fellowship. So that we did, having hot dogs and chips. It was great to hang out with so many youth, some of which we all knew, and some we didn’t. After packing up our gear, we headed out to Clarenville for the night…and arrived around 1:30 am. SOOOO tiring!!!

After having a huge breakfast (who says you can’t stuff your face on ministry trips) at Shauna-lee’s house, we continured further east, in which we had the awesome priviledge of going to the Whitbourne Youth Correctional Centre. There we ministered to 10-12 guys and the staff. The guys, aging from 16-18 years old were very attentive, and as we spoke and did some improv and drama, we could feel God’s presence filling the room. Afterwards, we got the chance to simply hang out with them. Most of them didn’t want to leave the chapel, and the staff mentioned that after 16+ years of working there, they have never seen the residents eager to stay after the dismissal. One guy even wanted to do some more improv with us, and so we did more. We had some great feedback from the staff that were working there. Some said that they had never had a group come and do such crazy improv and relational ministry. Nonetheless we are greatful of how God blessed us with such an opportunity.

Tonight, after a very healthy meal of PIZZA, we prepared to do a service at the  Pentecostal church in Clarenville. Once again we had a great time. Pastor Baine Andrews opted to video tape us making fools of ourselves during improv, and is attempting to post it on YouTube. None of us are very excited about that, but oh well….I mean after all, it IS off the top of our heads. It was a great night… and now it’s lights out!!

Tomorrow we are heading to Cambelton for one of our last ministries. We are all pooped, but excited. Pictures will be posted up as soon as we get them all together, and on my computer!!
